MALMSTROM AFB MAY 1965 SPECIALLY DESIGNED AUGER SPINS EARTH OFF BLADES AS IT BORES 62 FOOT SHAFT THAT IS 16 FEET IN DIAMETER. AUGER BORES SHAFT FULL FACE AND IS CAPABLE OF COMPLETING ONE OF THE GIANT HOLES IN AS LITTLE AS EIGHT HOURS IN FAVORABLE GROUND CONDITIONS. MORE THAN HALF OF THE 50 SHAFTS REQUIRED AT THE PROJECT ARE BEING SUNK WITH AUGERS. OTHER SHAFTS ARE SUNK BY CONVENTIONAL DRILLING AND MINING METHODS.
